Kindergartners will read a story  about
 
People Who Help
in the neighborhood.  We will discuss what we want to be when we grow up and  sing songs about bakers, firemen, dentists and teachers.  We will review the d sound and practice writing and figuring out if there was a d at the beginning and end of words.
We also lookat sentences that had two different choice words and pick out the word that make sense.
Our sight words this week are

Past Kindergarten Units






First Graders will read a story about an Astronaut.
It is called Meet Mae Jemison.  It tells about Jamison's dream to become an astronaut and shows  pictures of her in a space shuttle with fellow crew members.  It tells us that she had another dream.  Ask your children about her second dream.
We will practice reading long e words like peach, sheep and me and learn when we should add an s or ed to verbs. Then we will make inferences after reviewing what we read and what we know. Then we will learn the rule for using see or sees and say or says.

First grade units



Second Grade will read
The Snowed Under Sled.
It is a realistic fiction story about a boy who wants to race his sled in a competition but can not find it when it was time.  Ask your children what happened to Alex's sled and what he and his mom did to solve his problem.
Our phonics skill practice this week is oo, ui, ew sounds.  We will also discuss compound words and irregular past tense verbs too.  Then we will write predictions to clues that are given to us.

Third Grade will read
Resources All Around
It will discuss the uses  of our natural resources  sun, oil, water, wood, and soil.
 It will make us aware of  the importance of finding better ways to use our natural resources and we will learn new words like reservoirs, minerals, refined  and nutrients.
We will also work on making contractions which combine two words into one shorter word by using an apostrophe where the letters are missing. (do not to  don't) We will discuss soft c and soft g words and we will review helping verbs which helps the main verb show an action or make a statement like, " Fresh water is found in lakes."  (Is is the helping verb.) Then we once again we will work on the comprehension skills compare and contrast. (Compare tells how two things are alike.)

Fourth Grade will read  the book called
  Saving the Whales.
We will learn that there are many species of whales and specific facts about certain whales that are endangered.   We will learn ways to keep them safe by building sanctuaries, keeping the noise down in our oceans and keeping the water clean. We will also be told about whales that had been saved by people.
Our phonics skill this week is oi and oy words as well as ou and ow words.  We will then discuss homographs which is a word with two meanings.  Then we will work on finding possessive nouns
(Words that show who or what has something.) and pronouns in sentences. We will discover that possessive nouns use an apostrophe but there are specific pronoun words. (my, your, his, her, its, our, their)
We will conclude by sequencing the food chain of the whale. 


Fifth Grade will read a story called
Blizzard. 
We will learn what causes a blizzard and why it is so dangerous. Then we will learn what part of the United States is vulnerable to major snow storms and what meteorologists and scientists are doing to help us predict bad weather and keep us safe in blizzards and snowstorms. Last we will read about historical blizzards
 The skills we will practice this week are words with the ch-schwa-r and sh-shwa-r like feature and measure.  We will also write good descriptive sentences with and will be introduced to more multiple meaning words.  Last we will review possessive nouns and  possessive pronouns.
