Unit 5 Week 1
This week my Kindergarten students will read
What Can You Do? It is a story about how weather
effects us.
We will sing a song with many "l" words and review the sound
of "l" and learn many words that begin with "l". Next we
will discuss the difference between fantasy and reality,
draw and write what we like to do in the rain, check our comprehension
and look
at sentence frames.
First Graders will read Hopscotch
Daydream which features a painting from long ago and so we
will discuss daydreams, night dreams and
Fantasy and Reality.
We will learn new vocabulary words, discuss how to pronounce words with
the oo, oa and ow sounds and
begin to realize that adjectives make a
noun more interesting because
adjectives describe nouns.
Sight words this week are
"always, father, love, mother"
Second Grade will read about the
Sonoran Desert Animals.
We will learn that this particular desert has more rain than
most
deserts and it covers Mexico and parts of California and Arizona.
The book discusses many types of desert animals and their predators.
The author believes this desert is special because of the variety of
arachnids, poisonous snakes, reptiles and birds.
We will discuss possessive nouns, ou,
ow sounds, author's purpose and
pronouns.

Third Graders will read an Informational Nonfiction book called Children at Work:
Colonial America.
They will learn all about Apprentice laborers and how people during
colonial times learned a trade.
We will compare what is was like in
olden times to what it is like
today. We will learn new compound words
like silversmith and discuss
sequence of events. Singular and plural pronouns
will be our
final topic for the week.
Fourth grade will read ABC volunteer. It is
about children who gave up their free time and volunteered after school
to help adults learn to read. They will discover that teaching others
helps them learn too.
We will discuss the difference between connotation and denotation. We
will also practice dividing vc/vc syllables like pic/ture. Next we will
continue to improve summarizing and
working on adjectives.
Fifth Grade will read Animals
of
the Poles.
It discusses how the animals of the north and south pole survive
the icy climate. We will discuss each problem and the ways each
animal has adapted to solve the problem.
This week we will work on word parts and base words with affixes.
Affixes is a word part added
to the
beginning or end of a base word. Some affixes are er, ist,
ful and
ed. We will also review
soft g hard g words. Then we will learn that often stories
are written about problems which is
something a person needs to fix and
then the author offers a solution which is a way to fix a
problem.
Last we will review adjectives which are
words that describes a
noun. Then we will learn about demonstrative adjectives that tell
if a noun is singular or plural and
how
far away it is Demonstrative adjectives are these, those, that and this.
